The son of a Param Vir Chakra awardee and the country’s prominent freedom fighter Abdul Hamid, died of medical negligence in his treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday.
The family told reporters that the hospital authorities did not conduct a COVID test on 61 year old Ali Hasan, the second son of Hamid.
“My father died due to negligence by the doctors and hospital staff, who turned a deaf ear to our pleas,” Hasan’s son Saleem said.
“My father was unwell for the past two to three days and admitted to LLR hospital on Wednesday after complaining of severe cough and difficulty in breathing apart from a dip in the oxygen level. Here, he was put on oxygen support but the facility was removed just after four hours by the hospital saying my father’s health is stable and there was no need of oxygen anymore,” he added.
After witnessing father’s deteriorating health, Saleem approached the hospital staff and requested them to provide him oxygen, but the request fell on deaf ears.
Hasan’s father, Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, PVC, was an Indian Army soldier who posthumously received India’s highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Hamid joined the army in December 1954, and was posted to the 4th Battalion of the Grenadiers regiment.
