Father of jailed student activist Natasha Narwal, Mahavir Narwal succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday after being hospitalised due to deteriorating health.

Natasha Narwal, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University and a member of Delhi based feminist group Pinjra Tod, is under judicial custody since May 28 last year for Delhi pogrom conspiracy case. She is charged with the non-bailable Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for her alleged role in the “conspiracy” inciting violence during February 2020 Delhi pogrom.

“Mahavir Narwal died while on an unending quest to get his daughter Natasha released. Her personal tragedy reflects the tragedy of our political prisoner incarcerated by a cruel system. They face life sentences in covid infected jails before the courts decide on their fate,” Pamela Philipose, a researcher wrote on Twitter confirming his death.

Earlier on Sunday, activists had launched a twitter campaign urging judiciary to grant immediate bail to Natasha Narwal to visit her father.

On 5 March this year, on Natasha Narwal’s 32nd birth anniversary, Mahavir Narwal spoke to Maktoob about Natasha’s student activism and state hunt against his daughter.
