UP: Muslim League state chief arrested on way to visit site of demolished Barabanki mosque

Indian Union Muslim League Uttar Pradesh state unit president Dr. Mohammad Mateen Khan was arrested on Friday by the UP Police as he was on his way to Barabanki to visit the site of illegally demolished Gareeb Nawaz Al Maroof Mosque.

“Firmly denounce the arrest of Dr. Mateen Khan, IUML UP president, enroute to visit site of razed mosque in Barabanki. This is, apart from justifying illegal razing, yet another alarming move to silence critics. You can’t silence us. Fighting for justice and democracy is not a crime,” party national general secretary and Lok Sabha member ET Muhammed Basheer took to Twitter to condemn his colleague’s arrest.

According to Ram Sanehi Ghat police Station in Barabanki, Khan was detained for allegedly violating the ban in the area.

“I have spoken to the police officer concerned and it is learned that Dr. Khan would be produced before the Barabanki District Magistrate on Saturday,” Basheer MP said.

The demolition of the 100-year-old Gareeb Nawaz Al Maroof Mosque in the central Uttar Pradesh town of Barabanki, came into limelight after UK-based newspaper The Guardian reported about it on Tuesday.

Prominent Muslim organisations including Indian Union Muslim League have demanded from the government to rebuild the mosque which was demolished by the local administration on Monday, defying the High Court order.
