Tripura: CPIM MLA injured in BJP attack, Former CM says state’s law and order collapsed

Senior politician and Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA, Sudhan Das, was attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party workers in the Rajnagar area in Tripura’s South district on Sunday.

Senior politician and Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA, Sudhan Das, was attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party workers in the Rajnagar area in Tripura’s South district on Sunday.

This comes hours after former chief minister Manik Sarkar condemned chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb alleged failure to control the law and order situation in the state.

Das was in the middle of a protest against rising fuel prices in his constituency. The injured include two personal guards of Das.

“No arrest has been made so far. We are investigating the cases,” Belonia sub-divisional police officer Soumya Debbarma told Maktoob.

“After holding a rally across Rajnagar, the CPI(M) leaders, workers and supporters gathered at a street corner. BJP workers started pelting brick-bats at CPI(M) leaders and workers. MLA Sudhan Das sustained serious injuries on his head and hands. Several other party leaders and activists were also injured,” a press statement from the CPI(M) reads.

BJP workers also attacked the residence of the MLA and pelted firecrackers and bricks at his house, left party alleged. MLA’s wife Jaya Banerjee suffered a chest injury.

Sarkar who served as the Chief Minister of Tripura from March 1998 to March 2018 and currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in Tripura Legislative Assembly, said the CPI(M) would approach the prime minister and president of India as the chief minister and governor of Tripura have failed to control violence.
