Leo lifts Copa, Di Maria’s goal wins Argentina its first Copa title since 1993

Argentina won the Copa America for the first time since 1993. It is the alibiceleste 15th Copa America title and Messi wins his first senior title with his national team.

Argentina won their first major title in 28 years on Saturday when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America.

Argentina have defeated Brazil in the Copa América final for the first time since 1937, equalling Uruguay’s record as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history in the process (15 titles). And they did it at the Maracanã.

Di Maria got the winner midway through the first half when he lobbed Ederson after full back Renan Lodi failed to cut out a long through ball.

Messi, who missed a golden chance to score with two minutes remaining, finished the tournament’s joint top goalscorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar.
