UK: Domestic violence surges after a football match ends

Reports and studies on Football, alcohol and domestic abuse show that domestic abuse (DA) increases when England wins or loses a game. There were pieces of proof that corroborated how domestic violence increases following the game at the end of the week. The outcome of the game played on the ground translates into a risk of violence at home. Reports appear that DA decreases 5 per cent during the games and increases after the match, in 10-12 hours.

Why does domestic violence increase when England plays football? “It is a disturbing truth that in the UK there is always an undercurrent of domestic violence that is fundamental since we have not come to terms with a world in which the treatment of the genders ought to be equal, but behind that, of course, is the economic structure which implies that largely women are more financially dependent on male structures. So, and at whatever point there’s a situation where there’s a slight control imbalance, the people get energised (during the game). Human nature being what it is, it can and does end up in domestic abuse.”,  cites a person, who was randomly questioned in the street by Press TV in the UK.

We see that the report carried out by Dr Stuart Kirby and Professor Brian Francis of Lancaster University with Rosalie O’Flaherty and published in the Journal of research in crime and delinquency, found that the average number of occurrences of domestic violence on the days when England played was 79.3 compared to 58.2 on the days the group did not play. Studies conducted by Lancaster College in 2013 found that abuse increased by 26 per cent when England played and 38 per cent when they lost.

A 10 per cent increase in the domestic abuse incidents after the early games, which start allowing the spectators in and off the ground to devour liquor before the game, start between 12p.m. to 6.30p.m. BST (British Summer Time). Research conducted by Ria Ivandić Tom Kirchmaier Neus Torres-Blas reveals that after the match, domestic abuse incidents reverse and start growing by 5 per cent every two hours within the first 4 hours following the game. The highest increases to the extent of 8.5 per cent and happens in between 10 to 12 hours after the start of the game then the effect disappears around 16 hours following the game.

The researchers stress the initial 5 per cent decrease in the incidents during the 2-hour duration of the game suggesting a substitution effect of football and domestic abuse. However, following the initial decrease, after the game, domestic abuse starts increasing and peaks about 10 hours after the game, leading to a positive cumulative effect. Researches show that increases were controlled by perpetrators who had consumed liquor when matches were before 7 p.m. Unexpected game results are not found to have a significant effect. There was 14 per cent increase in domestic abuse where the one commits crime consumes alcohol, there was a 25% increase in the domestic abuse incidents with early games where the perpetrators consume alcohol.

A police officer quoted in the report for the Press TV said that the World Cup is a reason for  several people to party, nevertheless delight and desire that result in losing of hope and rise of conflict with the kick of a ball. The end of the Euro cup matches between Italy and England witnessed bizarre incidents which manifested in the ‘White Men’s burden’ over the minority. The respective match pictures the violence rates on our screens, people abusing the players and others condemning actions of the football fanatics who quoted the racist statements.
