PA Ranjith raps Rolling Stone for ‘erasing’ Arivu from coverstory about his songs

Tamil filmmaker PA Ranjith on Sunday strongly condemned pop culture and music magazine Rolling Stone India for overlooking the contribution of Dalit musician, Arivarasu Kalainesan aka Arivu, in their coverstory about internet sensation songs Enjoy Enjami and Neeya Oli.

Rolling stone tweeted the cover of their August edition on Friday announcing their cover story about two Tamil songs, penned by Arivu.

The magazine cover features Dhee and Shan Vincent de Paul who are branded as international Tamil artists blurring boundaries.

“The triumphant South Asian artists have been at the front of erasing border lines with songs like “Enjoy Enjaami” and “Neeye Oli” respectively, released via platform and label @joinmaajja,” Rolling Stone tweeted.

The Internet took no gap to call out the ‘erasure’ of Arivu who is considered the ‘real deal’ of these songs.

@TherukuralArivu, the lyricist of #Neeyaoli and singer as well as lyricist of #enjoyenjami has once again been invisiblised. @RollingStoneIN and @joinmaajja is it so difficult to understand that the lyrics of both songs challenges this erasure of public acknowledgement?” — PA Ranjith tweeted.

Arivu is part of PA Ranjith’s music band The Casteless Collective.

Enjoy Enjaami, which is considered a milestone single in the Tamil indie music space, is based on the story of Arivu’s grandmother, Valliammal. “Neeye Oli” a track from PA Ranjith’s movie Sarpatta Parambarai is also a political song, penned down by Shan Vincent de Paul and Arivu.

Many point out the anti-caste songs are appropriated by Upper caste singers while overlooking the contribution of Arivu, the Dalit.

Recently, the remix version of Enjoy Enjami by DJ Snake and Dhee became the first-ever Independent Tamil song to get featured on Times Square Billboard. There also Arivu’s image was not used alongside Dhee on the billboard, drawing criticism.

Ranjith also slammed music label Maajaa, backed by AR Rahman which is behind both the songs.
