Muslim youth booked under NSA for photo wearing Pakistan flag shirt

21-year-old Muslim youth in Ujjain city, Madhya Pradesh was booked under the stringent National Security Act for posting an allegedly “pro-Pakistan” photo on his Instagram, PTI reported.

Sahil Lalla was arrested after a complaint by a Bajrang Dal leader, the police said. Under the NSA, authorities can detain a person for up to 12 months without a charge.

His arrest came two hours after he put up a photo on his Instagram page where he was wearing a T-shirt with the Pakistani flag and the word “Jordan” on it.

District convener of Bajrang Dal, Pintu Kaushal, lodged the complaint against Lalla.

“Acting on that complaint, police arrested Sahil Lalla and recommended invoking the NSA against him,” Ujjain Superintendent of Police Satyendra Shukla said.

Lalla was also booked on charges of trying to disturb communal harmony and posing law and order problems.

On Sunday, the Ujjain district administration invoked the NSA against four people for allegedly shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” in a poor quality video shared by right-wing media outlets. Ten people have been arrested so far in the case.

According to Indian Express, over 20 people who have been identified from videos of the Thursday night Muharram related gathering have been booked under IPC Sections 124A (sedition) and 153B (imputation, assertion prejudicial to national integration).

Fact check website, Alt News have published a rebuttal to the claims of media reports saying that the crowd is chanting “Qazi Saab Zindabad”. In a longer version of the 16-second video viral on social media, from two minutes onwards, ‘Qazi Saab Zindabad’ is audible.
