Highways blocked after farmers lathicharged in Haryana

Haryana police resorted to lathicharge on farmers in Karnal who were protesting against a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar Saturday afternoon.

According to ANI, many protesting farmers sustained injuries as the cops used force to disperse the agitators who had blocked the national highway in Karnal.

Several of the injured were rushed to hospitals by their fellow protestors to get them medical aid.

This comes after farmers’ union leaders issued an appeal to the protesting farmers to block the highways and toll plazas across Haryana and nearby states.

The farmers attempted to gather outside Prem Plaza Hotel in Karnal where the meeting on the upcoming municipal polls chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was on but when they could not reach there, they blocked the national highway at Bastara toll plaza.

The protestors also showed black flags to BJP leaders and tried to stop their vehicles from moving ahead.

Following the police action, BKU leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni also reacted to police’s use of force on farmers and appealed to the farmers from across the state to reach Bastara and other toll plazas in large numbers.

“We slam the BJP government for using police force on farmers once again. I request all farmers to come out and block all highways in the state,” Charuni said.

Several highways across Haryana were blocked after Chadhuni’s appeal.

Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condemned the lathicharge and tweeted: “The action on farmers at Karnal is undemocratic and inhuman. Everyone has the right to protest in a democracy. Governments are not run with fear of the bullet but by winning hearts.”
