Trinamool’s Abhishek Banerjee, Wife Rujira Summoned by ED in Coal Case

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee have been summoned for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering and coal scam case, news agency PTI reported on Saturday.

While Abhishek Banerjee has been summoned on 3 September, Rujira Banerjee has been called on 1 September, ANI reported.

Abhishek Banerjee, who is Trinamool’s general secretary, is also West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.

Two senior IPS officers of West Bengal police – Shyam Singh and Gyanwant Singh – have also been summoned by the ED in the same case on September 8 and 9, respectively, reported NDTV.

The case, filed under criminal sections of the (PMLA), was filed by the ED after studying a November, 2020 FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that alleged a multi-crore coal pilferage scam related to the Eastern Coalfields Ltd mines in the state”s Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol.

Trinamool Congress and Banerjee have been denying all charges and calling the procedures “political vendetta.”
