Dozens of women took to the streets of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan on Saturday demanding the right to work and role in future government drafted by Taliban.
Demonstrators laid a wreath outside Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry to honour Afghan soldiers who died fighting the Taliban before marching on to the presidential palace.
According to Al Jazeera, Saturday’s demonstration marks at least the fourth time women in Kabul and the western city of Herat have gathered to demand their rights in a future Taliban-led government.
Taliban, in its first press conference after the Kabul takeover, said the group ‘is committed to the rights of women within the framework of Sharia’.
“Our sisters, our men have the same rights; they will be able to benefit from their rights. They can have activities in different sectors and different areas on the basis of our rules and regulations: educational, health and other areas. They are going to be working with us, shoulder to shoulder with us.”
In late August, the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said women who work with the government should stay at home until they can ensure their safety on the streets and in offices.
A group of women and civil society activists in Nimruz province also staged a protest on Saturday.
The Taliban has yet to form a government, but there have been reports that an announcement is imminent.
Speaking at a panel discussion at the Venice Film Festival, Afghan female filmmakers begged the world to support its artists and warned that a country without culture will eventually lose its identity.
