Hundreds of CPIM workers take to the streets to protest BJP violence in Tripura

A protest demonstration was organised in Agartala condemning BJP violence.

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the violence unleashed in Tripura by the ruling party, the BJP, against the CPI(M) and the Left Front.

The Polit Bureau calls upon all its party units to organise protests demanding an end to the attacks on the CPI(M) and protection of democratic rights in the state following the offices of the CPI(M), including the state headquarters, were attacked by mobs of the saffron party men in a pre-planned fashion.

Among the offices which were damaged or burnt down are the Udaipur sub-divisional office, Gomati district committee office, Sepahijala district committee office, Bishalgarh sub-divisional committee office, West Tripura district committee office, and the Sadar sub-divisional committee office.

The most brazen attack was on the state committee office in Agartala, says the left party.

The BJP men have ransacked the ground and first floors of the office burnt two office cars and broken the bust of Dasarath Deb, a revered leader of the people of Tripura.

“A mob entered the head office and vandalised everything they found on their way. The vehicle parked outside the office was set on fire. They even ransacked the media houses and set fire to their vehicle. The journalists were also not spared,” the Left Front convener Bijan Dhar said.

CPIM’s top committee alleged that the police who were present at many of these venues remained silent bystanders.  In the case of the state committee office, some CRPF jawans were present in front of the office but they were withdrawn an hour before the attack began.

Even the media was not spared with attacks on the offices of an electronic media channel `PN-24 News’ and a newspaper `Pratibadi Kalam’.  The office of the newspaper `Daily Desharkatha’, which is supported by the CPI(M), was also damaged.

The Agartala Press Club Secretary Pranab Sarkar has demanded that the government take immediate measures and arrest the culprits within the next 12 hours. “If the media houses are not compensated, and the miscreants are not brought under the law, a massive movement will be organised,” Sarkar said.

“The impunity with which the BJP gangs operated shows the connivance of the state government.  These attacks took place because the ruling party has tried and failed to suppress the activities of the main Opposition in the state. This outrageous attack on democracy and the Opposition must be condemned by all democratic-minded people and parties,” reads the CPI(M) PB statement.

The Union Government, in particular the Home Ministry, should intervene immediately to ensure that the rule of law prevails and the rights of citizens are protected in Tripura, the left party urged.

Letter to PM Modi

“The manner in which the attacks took place makes it clear that the State Government is grossly failing in discharging its Constitutional responsibility of maintaining law and order and trampling on the Constitutional rights of the opposition to organise political activities in a peaceful manner,” Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The failure of the police, if not connivance, to check the violence and book the culprits makes it imperative that the Central Government act to enforce the Constitutional principles,” expecting an urgent response from PM Modi, Yechury said.
