Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: Akhilesh Yadav arrested

Samajwadi Party chief and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was arrested by the police from outside his residence in Lucknow where he staged a sit-in after being stopped from visiting Lakhimpur Kheri district, where eight including four farmers were killed in the violence unleashed by BJP men and the people associated with Union minister Ajay Mishra including his son on Sunday.

He was taken in the vehicle of SHO Hazratganj police.

“Even the British did not commit such atrocities as much as the BJP government is doing on the farmers. The Minister of State for Home and the Deputy Chief Minister should resign. ₹ 2 crore should be given to the farmers who have lost their lives. Their families should be given government jobs,” Yadav said.

This comes after Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was detained as she headed to meet the families of the farmers killed.

News agencies say Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav has also been detained while he was on his way to Lakhimpur Kheri.

On Sunday, four farmers were among eight persons killed in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri after a convoy of three SUVs, including one owned by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, hit a group of farm protesters. The protest leader said one farmer was killed in firing by minister Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra.

Farm leaders are conducting protests in all districts across the country on Monday to demand punishment for the culprits.

They also seek the “arrest of the Minister and his son” who, they said, was driving one of the SUVs. They called for a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.
