Lakhimpur Kheri: Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra arrested

Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, accused of running over farmers, was Saturday arrested after over 12 hours of questioning in Lakhimpur Kheri violence incident that left eight persons including four farmers and one journalist dead.

A senior police officer said he had been giving “evasive answers” and not cooperating.

Sources say he will be produced at a court tomorrow.

“Ashish Mishra, son of MoS Home Ajay Mishra Teni, has been arrested as he was not cooperating during the interrogation and didn’t answer few questions. He will be produced before the court,” ANI news agency quotes DIG Upendra Agarwal, Saharanpur as saying.

The charges against Ashish Mishra usually merit an immediate arrest and questions have been raised whether he was afforded VIP treatment because of his father. Ashish had also skipped summons a day ago.

The arrest came a day after the Supreme Court reminded the Uttar Pradesh government that the law must take its course against “whoever is involved”  amid nationwide protest over the farmers’ killings and mounting pressure from farmer groups.

Demanding the arrest of Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra and his son Ashish, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) — an umbrella body of farmers protesting against the contentious farm laws — on Saturday called for ‘rail roko’ on October 18 to protest Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
