Congress will give 40 per cent of the party tickets to women candidates in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi announced on Tuesday.
“Women will fully participate in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections. Parties think they can appease women by giving an LPG cylinder, Rs 2000,” said Congress’s key leader.
“This decision has been taken for the rape victim in Unnao who was burnt to death, for the victim in Hathras who did not get justice, for the girl I met in Lakhimpur Kheri who said she wanted to become the Prime Minister. This decision is for every woman who wants to take Uttar Pradesh forward,” Gandhi said during a press conference in Lucknow.
Two days ago, Senior Congress leader PL Punia announced that Priyanka Gandhi will be the face of the party’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh.
“When I was campaigning in Uttar Pradesh in 2019, a few woman students from Allahabad university pointed out that rules on campus and hostels were different for men and women. This is a decision for them. This decision is for the woman who told me during Ganga Yatra that there is no school in her village,” Priyanka told reporters.
The election to the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly is due next year.
