Rajasthan school teacher arrested for ‘celebrating Pakistan’s victory’, gets bail later

The arrest was hours after an FIR has been registered against Nafeesa at the Amba Mata police station.

Nafeesa Attari, a private school teacher in Rajasthan’s Udaipur city who has been sacked from her job after she shared a celebratory post on WhatsApp following Pakistan’s victory against India in the T20 World Cup match, was arrested by Rajasthan police on Wednesday. She was later granted bail on a personal bond of Rs. 20,000.

The arrest was hours after an FIR has been registered against Nafeesa at the Amba Mata police station.

“An FIR under section 153 B of the IPC (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) at Amba Mata police station in Udaipur,” Deputy Superintendent of Police in Udaipur, Mahendra Parik told ANI news agency.

Nafeesa on Sunday had posted a picture of the Pakistani team with the caption, “We won.” When the school management noticed the post, they sacked the teacher. “Yes, we have taken a decision to terminate the teacher,” said Mahendra Sojatia, the chairperson of Neerja Modi School.

Nafeesa then released a video message on YouTube apologising for her post. She said that she did not intend to hurt anybody’s sentiments.

“Someone messaged me and asked whether “you support Pakistan”,” she said. “As the message had emojis and it was an environment of fun, I replied “Yes”. But, it doesn’t mean anywhere that I support Pakistan. I am an Indian and I love India. I love India as much as everyone else does.”

On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered two separate cases under draconian UAPA against students and non-teaching staff of two medical colleges who celebrated the Pakistan cricket team’s victory over India in the T20 World Cup match.

India played against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. Pakistan won the match by 10 wickets.

After India’s loss, several Kashmiri students in Punjab and other parts of the country physically assaulted and faced Islamophobic abuses.

From the moment Pakistan completed a 10-wicket victory against India, pacer Shami, a Muslim member of India’s playing-XI, was subjected to terrible anti-Muslim abuse on social media. The match finished in the 18th over bowled by Shami as Pakistan chased down a target of 152 runs with relative ease at the Dubai International Stadium.
