UP: 7 booked for celebrating Pakistan’s cricket victory over India, 4 arrested

Uttar Pradesh Police has booked seven persons and taken four into custody on Wednesday for allegedly celebrating Pakistani team’s win against India in the T20 World Cup match that was held on October 24.

The seven are from 5 districts in the BJP led state.

They were booked and taken in custody “allegedly raising Pro-Pak slogans or celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the T20 Cricket World Cup match that took place on Oct 24,” read a brief from Chief Minister’s Office.

As per the FIR, three individuals have been arrested from Agra under sections 505 (1)B, 153A, of the IPC and 66 (F) of the IT Act, for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan and anti-national slogans after India’s loss. The three are under custody and the police are interrogating them further, according to ANI news agency.

Two from Bareilly have also been booked for “posting WhatsApp status in support of Pakistan and its cricket team,” says CMO.

Another youth from Bareilly was detained under section 66 of IT Act and 124 A IPC, for “uploading Pakistan’s flag as the cover image and profile image on his Facebook account and for uploading posts in support of Pakistan’s win vs India.”

The seventh person was detained from Lucknow under sections 151 CRPC and 507 IPC for posting a WhatsApp status “in support of Pakistan.”

Arrests, abuses and assaults after India’s loss

Nafeesa Attari, a private school teacher in Rajasthan’s Udaipur city who has been sacked from her job after she shared a celebratory post on WhatsApp following Pakistan’s victory against India in the T20 World Cup match, was arrested by Rajasthan police on Wednesday. She was later granted bail on a personal bond of Rs. 20,000.

The arrest was hours after an FIR has been registered against Nafeesa at the Amba Mata police station.

On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered two separate cases under draconian UAPA against students and non-teaching staff of two medical colleges who celebrated the Pakistan cricket team’s victory over India.

India played against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. Pakistan won the match by 10 wickets.

After India’s loss, several Kashmiri students in Punjab and other parts of the country were physically assaulted and faced Islamophobic abuses.

From the moment Pakistan completed a 10-wicket victory against India, pacer Shami, a Muslim member of India’s playing-XI, was subjected to terrible anti-Muslim abuse on social media. The match finished in the 18th over bowled by Shami as Pakistan chased down a target of 152 runs with relative ease at the Dubai International Stadium.
