Anti-Muslim slogans in Kerala: 4 BJP men arrested

4 Workers of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala’s Kannur district have been arrested a week after BJP activists raised hate slogans against Muslims during a rally in Thalassery town.

“There won’t be any mosques to pray five times,” slogans were raised by saffron party workers during last week’s march.

Police had registered a case against 25 BJP activists on the basis of a complaint lodged by various organisations, including Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Muslim Students Federation (MSF) and Fraternity Movement.

The case was registered under IPC 153 (enmity created amid different groups on grounds of religion, race, birth, language, residence) and IPC 143 (amounting to unlawful assembly.)

Police on Tuesday arrested BJP’s active workers Shiji, R Rajith, VV Sharath, and Sreerag. The BJP activists were produced before a court in Thalassery, which sent them to the judicial remand.

15 more have been identified as participants in the melee, Thalassery SI Sanal Kumar said to the media. Another case has been registered against 250 BJP activists for organising another rally in Thalassery on Friday, violating the prohibitory orders, he added.

After massive rallies and demonstrations against BJP’s Islamophobic slogans by various political organisations and Muslim groups, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had criticised the RSS and the BJP for raising hate slogans.

“What is their agenda by raising such slogans? They very well know that their agenda will not work in Kerala. But they want to spread such propaganda into the minds of people,” CM said four days after the incident.
