US wins appeal over extradition of WikiLeaks founder Assange

The United States won an appeal in London’s High Court to have Wikileaks founder Julian Assange extradited to face criminal charges.

The latest ruling means Assange is now closer to being extradited from a British prison to the US, where he would face spying charges over WikiLeaks’ publication of secret military documents a decade ago.

“The court allows the appeal,” Judge Timothy Holroyde said, adding that the US had given a package of assurances to Britain about the conditions of Assange’s detention.

The United States was appealing against a Jan. 4 ruling by a London District Judge that Assange should not be extradited because he would likely commit suicide in a U.S. prison, Reuters reported.

A lower court earlier this year refused the US’s request to extradite Assange to the America, saying that Assange’s mental health was too fragile to withstand the US judicial system.

High Court decision is a grave miscarriage of justice, said Julian Assange’s fiancée Stella Moris.

“How can it be fair, how can it be right, how can it be possible, to extradite Julian to the very country which plotted to kill him?” she asks.

“I’m sitting in court. The decision will be handed down in 10 minutes. I hope the High Court will bring this abusive and vindictive extradition to an end today so that our children will be able to spend Christmas with their father,” earlier she tweeted.

This is a breaking news story. More details soon…
