Four days after sweeping the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today declared Firhad Hakim as the next Kolkata Mayor.

Hakim who is a senior cabinet minister and a close aide of Mamata, was also the Mayor of the previous Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

“We will do our work as suggested by Mamata Banerjee. We have many plans. We have to first implement what we promised in our manifesto,” Hakim said after being named as the new Mayor.

Hakim had won the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) poll from ward 82 and is an MLA from the Kolkata Port assembly seat.

According to PTI news agency, Hakim will be the first mayor of Kolkata from the Muslim community since Independence.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the newly-elected TMC councillors in Kolkata, which was chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Even after many forces tried to defame us, people have kept their faith and confidence in us. We are grateful to them,” Mamata said while addressing newly-elected councillors.

She also announced that Atin Ghosh will be Deputy Mayor and South Kolkata MP Mala Roy will be the next KMC Chairperson.

Mamata Banerjee told the meeting that she will review the performance of Kolkata Municipal Corporation every six months, reported PTI news agency.

She went on to say: “No one should think that we have won and we can sit idle now. That won’t be tolerated, everybody has to work diligently. There is no place for complacency and arrogance. KMC’s performance will be reviewed every six months and action will be taken against those who are found to be non-performing both by the party and the administration.”
