Delhi: Protesting doctors meet Union minister; FORDA to continue strike

Resident doctors in Delhi, who have been protesting over the delay in NEET-PG 2021 counselling for the past 12 days, on Tuesday decided to continue the protest, as a meeting between their federation’s delegation and the Union health minister failed to make any headway.

The meeting between a delegation of the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya took place at Nirman Bhawan in New Delhi, but the doctors’ body said, the “response was not satisfactory”.

According to the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), about 5,000 to 6,000 resident doctors of multiple city hospitals boycotted all work on Tuesday, except for COVID-19 duty.

“Today we had a meeting with the Health Minister. He said that there is a Supreme Court hearing on 6th (January) and he will try his best that counselling’s date will come on that day. We said that we need a written apology from Delhi Police for police beating and abusing resident doctors. The Minister said that we’ll get a written apology too. He also promised cancellation of the FIR,” Dr. Manish said on Tuesday evening, soon after the meeting with Union minister.

On Wednesday, the doctors are protesting at their respective hospitals. Several non-medical college hospitals have joined the protest.

Doctors from Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality hospital and Delhi government’s second super specialty hospital have also joined the strike today.

Doctors from private Hamdard medical college too have joined the strike.

On Monday, the Delhi Police detained several resident doctors who were marching to the Supreme Court in protest against the delay in NEET 2021 counseling and protesting female doctors alleged that they were manhandled by male police officers.

Condemning the police actions, FORDA called it a “Black day in the history of the medical fraternity”. The doctors announced that all healthcare institutions would be completely shut down from Monday.

Reports said at least 6 women resident doctors were slapped by male police officers while some were thrashed on road.
