Emma Watson’s pro-Palestine post ire Israel officials

Hollywood actress and activist Emma Watson’s Instagram post in solidarity with Palestine on Monday drew global attention while making many Israeli officials angry.

A former Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called the actor “antisemite”, while thousands of pro-Palestine users poured in to laud the actor for taking a stand in support of Palestine.

The picture was posted on Monday from a pro-Palestinian rally with the phrase, “Solidarity is a verb”. The picture was originally posted in May last year by the Bad Activism Collective.

Pro-Palestine activists thanked the 31-year-old British actor for her support and criticised the Israeli envoy for going after the film star.

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, criticised the post.

“Fiction may work in Harry Potter but it does not work in reality. If it did, the magic used in the wizarding world could eliminate the evils of Hamas (which oppresses women and seeks the annihilation of Israel) and the PA (which supports terror). I would be in favor of that!” he wrote on Twitter, making reference to the actor’s famous film, Harry Potter.

The photo was accompanied by a quote about the meaning of solidarity from the intersectional feminist scholar Sara Ahmed that says,” solidarity does not assume that our struggles are the same struggles, or that our pain is the same pain, or that our hope is for the same future. Solidarity involves commitment, and work, as well as the recognition that even if we do not have the same feelings, or the same lives, or the same bodies, we do live on common ground.”

Watson’s post has been liked by more than a million users and attracted more than 100,000 comments.

According to Watson’s profile, her Instagram account “has been taken over by an anonymous Feminist Collective.” Watson has been vocal about women’s rights and many other social issues in recent years.

Watson was appointed to a G7 advisory body for women’s rights in 2019, consulting with leaders on foreign policy.
