Vishal Jha (21), Shweta Singh (19), Mayank Rawal (21): Three arrests in Bulli Bai case

Mumbai court sent 21-year-old Jha to police custody till 10 January in connection with the case.

Mumbai cyber police have arrested one more student from Uttarakhand in connection with the ‘Bulli Bai‘ case – a GitHub app targeting hundreds of Muslim women.

The student, identified as Mayank Rawal (21), was nabbed from Uttarakhand in the early hours of Wednesday.

The city police had earlier arrested Shweta Singh (19), alleged to be the main culprit, from Uttarakhand, and engineering student Vishal Kumar Jha (21) from Bengaluru in connection with the case.

Nearly six months after the ‘Sulli Deals‘ where photographs of more than 80 Muslim women put up for sale by right-wing Hindus, asserting anti-Muslim hatred and selective sexism, photos of hundreds of Muslim women were uploaded by an unidentified group on an app using GitHub – by the name of ‘Bulli Bai’ – on 1 January 2022.

The arrests come soon after the Mumbai police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons following complaints against ‘Bulli Bai.’

Vishal Kumar Jha is a third-semester student of civil engineering in Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru. Mumbai court sent 21-year-old Jha to police custody till 10 January in connection with the case. The court also granted a warrant to search his Bengaluru residence.

19-year-old Shweta Singh was taken into custody from Udham Singh Nagar district and then transit remand was sought till January 5 by Mumbai police officials. Shweta’s name was revealed by Jha.

According to Mumbai Police, Shweta is the main accused and she was handling three accounts related to the ‘Bulli Bai’ app.

According to the investigating team, Jha, Shweta, and other accused had tried to mislead users by assuming non-Hindu identities.

“Co-accused Vishal Kumar opened an account by the name Khalsa supremacist. On Dec 31, he changed the names of other accounts to resemble Sikh names. Fake Khalsa account holders were shown,” claimed police.
