Bulli Bai case: Complainant receives threats

The complainant in the Bulli Bai case on Sunday submitted a written complaint to the Mumbai Cyber police Crime Branch after receiving threats from an unknown caller.

According to Indian Express, police have lodged a non-cognisable complaint under Section 506 of the IPC.

The complainant is one among the 126 Muslim women targetted by the mock auction application that surfaced online on New Year eve. Complaints are registered from at least five states against the creators of the application.

The complainant’s FIR led to the arrest of four students from different parts of India, who collaborated on the Github platform to create the application to demean Muslim women.

Neeraj Bishnoi, 21, a second-year engineering student from Assam is the main accused in the case. The creators have been hailed as “heroes” by right-wing groups and social media handles, following their arrest.

Bishnoi took to Twitter to abuse Mumbai Police for arresting his teammates, which eventually led to his arrest by the Delhi Police.

The gendered Islamophobia has raised concerns about the radicalisation of the Hindu community, which is leading to hate crimes against minorities. Bulli Bai is the parody of another mock auction application “Sulli deals” that surfaced a few months back.

Meanwhile, a magistrate court in Bandra on Monday extended the custody of Singh and Rawat till Friday while Vishal Kumar Jha, who tested positive for Covid, has been sent to judicial custody.
