Flouting curbs, CPIM organises Mega dance event in Kerala

Amidst spike in COVID-19 cases, CPIM, Kerala’s ruling party, organised a mega dance attended by over five hundred women with utter disregard to the restrictions imposed by the government.

502 women participated in the Thiruvathira held at CSI School ground in Cheruvarakonam, Thiruvananthapuram. Although many had raised concern about the event, after the rehearsal on Monday, the district committee was unmindful about the restrictions.

The group dance is a prelude to the party’s district conference to be held from January 14 to 16. Criticism has mounted against CPIM for being unmindful of the COVID curbs as several regional and district conferences are scheduled amidst the third wave.

The mega Thiruvathira, a Hindu dance form, happened on the same day as SFI activist Dheeraj Rajendran’s funeral procession reached his hometown.

The programme is an initiative by the Parassala area committee of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, CPM’s women’s wing. Apparently, Salooja V R, the programme coordinator, is the chairman of the health and education standing committee of the Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat.

The dance was performed with a parody of the traditional folklore song that trumpeted Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for his rule in the state.

The Covid review meeting — chaired by Vijayan — on January 4 had restricted the number of people allowed for indoor programmes to 75 and outdoor functions to 150. The state government imposed strict restrictions to tackle the Omicron variant of coronavirus, including a seven-day compulsory home quarantine for international passengers.

CPM member MA Baby, party district secretary Anavoor Nagappan and MLA CK Hareendran were among the leaders attending the event. Police allegedly arrived at the venue in between the event but left without giving any instructions or taking any action.
