The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the Delhi Police, seeking action against right-wing Hindus making Islamophobic comments against Muslim women in a social audio app, Clubhouse.
This comes following a video of a Clubhouse conversation with sexist and Islamophobic remarks against Muslim women has surfaced on the internet. The video went viral on social media, triggering outrage and prompting calls for stringent action against right-wing Hindus involved.
The “participants are clearly heard making obscene, vulgar and derogatory remarks targeting Muslim women and girls”, a DCW statement noted.
DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal took cognisance of the same and asked the Delhi Police’s Cyber Crime cell to submit a detailed action taken report to the commission within five days.
“Someone tagged me on Twitter the detailed audio conversation on the Clubhouse app which targeted Muslim women and girls and made disgusting sexual comments against them,” Maliwal said.
She went on to say: “I feel outraged over the fact that such incidents are going on increasing in the country. Strongest action needs to be taken against the culprits and that’s why I have issued a Notice to Delhi Police seeking immediate FIR and arrests in the matter.”
In the letter to the city’s police, DCW sought a copy of the FIR from the police as well as the “details of the accused identified and arrested in the matter.” The women panel also asked the police to state its reasons if no accused has been arrested.
This comes close on the heels of the Islamophobic app Bulli Bai in which prominent Muslim women, including journalists, lawyers, and activists cutting across age groups, were targeted by upper-caste Hindus in an online “auction”.
