Karnataka: Hindutva men barge into school, opposes students offering Namaz

Karnataka: Hindutva group barges into school, opposes Muslims students praying in classroom
A Hindutva group in Karnataka’s Kolar district barged into a government school as Muslim students were offering namaz within school premises on Friday, January 21.

A Hindutva group in Karnataka’s Kolar district barged into a government school as Muslim students were offering namaz within school premises on Friday, January 21.

The members of the Hindutva group questioned the school authorities and filed a police complaint in the matter.

The students told the media that the headmistress has allowed them to do pray within the premises of Mulbagal Someshwara Palaya Bale Changappa Government Kannada Model Higher Primary School. The students have been offering Friday prayers inside the premises since December 2021.

Students said they were given permission to hold their prayers within the school by the headmistress, Uma Devi, to prevent the children from going outside the campus. Though Uma Devi denied this soon after the video of Hindutva groups confronting school authorities, she later admitted that she had given permission, The News Minute reported.

Even as no formal complaint has been filed against the school so far, the District Collector has ordered an inquiry after members of the Hindutva group barged into the school.

“India is known for its Constitutional values where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians are living together. The Manuwadi concept brought by these right-wing groups in schools is erroneous,” Zubair, SDPI taluk president told in a video statement soon after the incident.

“Every Friday, they hold Saraswathi pooja in school we have not opposed it, we want Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of unity should be followed irrespective of any religion. We demand such communal incidents should be stopped in our Taluk and maintain peace and harmony,” he said.

Karnataka has seen a rise in attacks against Muslims and Christians since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power.

Most recently, two Muslim youth Sameer (19) and Shamseer (21) from Nargund in Karnataka’s Gadag district were brutally attacked by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadres. 19-year-old Sameer succumbed to injuries at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) hospital in Hubli. Four men including a Bajrang Dal were arrested.

In Udupi, a group of Muslim students at a government college has been forced to sit outside the classroom for wearing Hijab for weeks now.
