UP: Samajwadi Party releases lists of 159 candidates, 30 star campaigners

The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday released the list of 159 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Party chief and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will contest from Karhal assembly seat in Mainpuri.

Party’s senior leader and founding member Azam Khan will contest from Rampul while his son Abdullah Azam Khan has been fielded from Suar. Jailed SP leader Azam Khan recently moved the Supreme Court seeking interim bail to campaign in the polls. Azam Khan has been lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur jail since February 2020 for a number of cases registered against him and Abdullah was released on bail last week after spending 23 months in jail.

Akhilesh’s uncle and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohia) president Shivpal Singh Yadav has been fielded from Jaswantnagar. 

Nahid Hasan has been fielded from Kairana while Pankaj Kumar Malik will be contesting from Muzzafarnagar.

Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls in seven phases on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3, and 7 and the counting of votes will be done on March 10.

Star campaigners

Samajwadi Party patron and former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav, and new entrant to the party Swami Prasad Maurya are among its 30-star campaigners for the first phase of the Assembly elections. 

The other leaders in the list are national vice-president Kiranmay Nanda, principal general secretary Ramgopal Yadav, Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan, the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Naresh Uttam Patel, leader of opposition in the Assembly Ramgobind Chaudhary, SP national executive member Javed Ali Khan and Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha president Mohammad Fahad.
