Lavanya suicide: DMK and allies accuse BJP of promoting ‘hate propaganda’

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi has accused Bharatiya Janata Party of using the death of Tamil Nadu student Lavanya to create disharmony in the state.

Kanimozhi was talking about the incident in Thanjavur where a Class 12 student Lavanya consumed poison after allegedly being forced to clean rooms in her hostel.

Lavanya’s dying statement that was recorded in writing by the police, and the FIR registered by the police, say that she was tortured by her hostel warden Sagaya Mary, exploited by the warden to do her personal work, which was the reason for her attempting suicide. Lavanya’s parents have said that the mistreatment was because Lavanya had refused to convert to Christianity. She did not respond to treatment by doctors and died in Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, 19 January.

“They are trying to create politics and disharmony here. Tamilnadu has always been a secular state and we all live as one. It is very sad that they are using a child’s death in such a way,” she said.

Kanimozhi said that school education minister Anbil Poyyamozhi has already clearly explained what has happened.

“The truth behind the death of the girl by suicide will be ascertained and those responsible will certainly be punished,” Poyyamozhi said.

Another prominent politician in the state Thol Thirumalavan, leader of Viduthalai Chirithaigal Katchi, an ally of DMK has also accused the saffron party of using the student’s suicide for promoting “hate propaganda”.

Thirumavalavan went on to say: “Those who are responsible for the student suicide should be brought before the law. In her confession to the magistrate, the student had talked about the warden who made her work excessively — based on which the warden was arrested. But using a video clip, the BJP is propagating that she was forced to convert to Christianity, causing her depression which had led to her death.”

CPIM Tamil Nadu leader Balakrishnan also launched a fresh attack against Tamil Nadu BJP’s “cringe politics.”

“The student had confessed that she went into depression due to the torture she faced in the hostel, which led her to take the drastic decision. But the BJP is diverting the issue into death caused due to religious confession for political gain. The Communist Party of India condemns this act and demands legal action against anyone who tries to cause disharmony in Tamil Nadu,” read a statement by Balakrishnan.
