Mumbai: BJP workers arrested for protesting move to ‘name’ sports complex after Tipu Sultan

Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Bharatiya Janata Party and Bajrang Dal workers who were protesting against “naming” of a garden in a sports complex in Malad after the 18-century ruler of Mysore Tipu Sultan.

Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Bharatiya Janata Party and Bajrang Dal workers who were protesting against “naming” of a garden in a sports complex in Malad after the 18-century ruler of Mysore Tipu Sultan.

The police said that FIRs will be lodged against the protesters for “rioting, unlawful assembly and violating COVID-19 guidelines”.

Congress leader and Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Aslam Shaikh, who inaugurated new facilities at the garden, said that the place always bore the name of Tipu Sultan, and there was no fresh nomenclature. Located at Malwani in Malad West, the place is popularly known as the Tipu Sultan Ground.

“There was no conflict on the name of Tipu Sultan in last 70 years, today BJP has sent its goons to defame the country and not let the country develop by creating ruckus over naming projects. We don’t need to get into controversy over nomenclatures,” the minister said.

Mumbai BJP president Mangal Prabhat Lodha, BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar, Opposition leader in state council Praveen Darekar,  BJP M) Gopal Shetti, Mumbai BJP vice-president Pawan Tripathi were present at the protest.

A total of 64 workers from Bajrang Dal and BJP were detained from Charkop junction and taken to the Charkop police station.

“We will not allow the ground to be named after a man who is responsible for the deaths of a large number of Hindus. The MVA government has insulted the sentiments of people. The BJP will not tolerate such an act. What is appalling is the manner in which the state government provided police protection to the event. But cops lathicharged BJP and Bajrang Dal workers who were protesting. This is highly condemnable,” said Maharashtra Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis.
