Chennai Police have registered an FIR against BJP Yuva Morcha President Vinoj P Selvam after he tweeted a caricature portraying a figure resembling Chief Minister Stalin standing next to a bulldozer while two more bulldozers were demolishing a temple.

A case has been registered and section 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) and 505 (Statement conducing public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked.

In the tweet, the young saffron leader wrote: “There’s news that this who showcased ‘Tamilnadu during Independence’ tablets during Republic Day have demolished 130 Hindu temples. Hinduism is being suppressed even more than during the Independence struggle. Please support the BJP alliance during Local Body Elections for Good governance.”

The case was registered based on a complaint from Ilangovan to the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office against Vinoj P Selvam claiming that he shared fake information on Twitter with the intent of creating enmity amongst people and causing social unrest.

“Stringent legal action will be taken against those who spread fake news or indulge in misinformation campaigns on social media pages or WhatsApp that may be against public tranquility and create religious hatred,” read a statement by City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal.
