In Western UP, a dozen BJP candidates face black flags, stones

West Uttar Pradesh has been witnessing several incidents of BJP candidates being shown black flags or not being allowed to enter the villages by the angry locals.

Journalists from ground say that the saffron party leaders are now feeling the impact of farmers’ protest on the election while BJP described them as sponsored protests organised by the rivals.

The region will go to polls in the first two phases, on February 10 and 14.

On 24 January, the convoy of Maninder Pal Singh, the BJP candidate from Siwalkhas, came under attack at Chur village. An FIR has been lodged naming 20 people, with 65 listed as unidentified. Singh alleged that seven cars of his convoy were damaged because of stone-pelting.

In Baghpat’s Chhaprauli, the BJP candidate Sahendra Ramala was shown black flags and was not allowed to enter Nirupada village. This happened on 28 January.

On 27 January evening, Vikram Saini, the sitting BJP MLA as well as candidate from Muzzafarnagar’s Khatauli, was gheraoed by a group of farmers raising anti-BJP slogans at Bhainsi village in his constituency.

“You have come after five years,” the farmers shouted at him, a viral video showed. Saini has been facing protests since he has hit the ground.

Meanwhile, BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said the people’s anger was valid.

“Government representatives have to face protests from farmers if they ignore their grievances,” he told reporters.
