Death, rape threats to Rana Ayyub; Mumbai Police arrests 24-year-old

Mumbai police on Thursday arrested a 24-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal city for sending death and rape threats to journalist Rana Ayyub on social media.

Siddharth Shrivastav, who works as a salesman in a garment shop, had threatened to kill Ayyub if she continued her work as a journalist, police said.

Police further said that Shrivastav used a false name to operate an Instagram account. He used vulgar and obscene language against Rana too, cops said.

Shrivastav was remanded in judicial custody.

The arrest comes nine days after a first information report was registered by the Mumbai police following Rana had complained of having received threats online.

Six people including four Twitter and two Instagram users were booked under sections of the IPC pertaining to sexual harassment, death threats, defamation and outraging the modesty of women and Information Technology Act for identity theft and publishing or transmitting obscene material.

Following Shrivastav’s arrest, Rana Ayyub said she was impressed with the “alacrity of Mumbai Police and Mumbai Police Commissioner.”

Award winning journalist Rana Ayyub has long been a victim of online trolling and threats by Hindutva groups.
