Children have been detained by Russian police for laying flowers and anti-war signs at the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow.

“In the Presnensky police department, children and their parents are left overnight,” Novaya Gazeta, Russia’s leading independent newspaper, tweeted in Russian, alongside a photo of the children and their parents.

“The police detained them when they laid flowers at the Ukrainian embassy,” it added.

Later, the children were released, the newspaper reported.

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its seventh day, Russia’s military claims it has taken control of the strategically important city of Kherson in southern Ukraine.

Local authorities deny Kherson has fallen, but say Russian troops have encircled the city.

Nearly 836,000 people have now fled Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).
