Ukraine: Remains of child found in burned pile of bodies in Bucha

The Associated Press said its reporters saw “the small, blackened foot of a child” in the tangle of a pile of six burned corpses in Bucha.

One of the blackened bodies had arms raised in supplication and face contorted in a scream, while the skull of another had a bullet hole in the left temple.

It was not clear who the people were or under what circumstances they were killed, the agency said.

“It’s horrible,” said Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky at the scene, which included other journalists. The minister said Russian President Vladimir Putin should “go to hell.”

The AP said it has seen dozens of dead bodies around Bucha, where Russian forces withdrew in the past week. The images, which included some with their arms bound, have horrified the world. Many victims appeared to have been shot at close range, some in the head.

Ukrainian officials have said the bodies of at least 410 civilians have been found in towns around Kyiv that were recaptured from Russian forces in recent days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week left Kyiv for his first reported trip since the war began nearly six weeks ago to see for himself what he called the “genocide” and “war crimes” in Bucha.

The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court at The Hague opened an investigation a month ago into possible war crimes in Ukraine.

167 children killed

At least 167 children have been killed in Ukraine including two in the past 24 hours, Ukrainian prosecutors have said.

Some 279 have been wounded, the General Prosecutor’s Office said on Telegram.

Most of the deaths were reported in the southeastern Donetsk region that is partially controlled by separatists and Russian troops (81), around Kyiv (78) and the eastern region of Kharkiv (64).
