Pakistan PM Imran Khan loses no-confidence vote

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has been ousted from power after losing a no-confidence vote in parliament in the early hours of Sunday, days after he blocked a similar attempt.

The no-confidence motion was supported by 174 lawmakers, more than half of the 342-seat parliament.

The session of Pakistan’s National Assembly will be called to nominate the new Prime MinisterShehbaz Sharif is likely to be the new PM of Pakistan. That person can remain in power until October 2023 when the next election is due to be held.

The passing of the motion came after the country’s Supreme Court ruled that Khan acted unconstitutionally in the previous motion for a no-confidence vote and dissolving parliament.

Khan on Friday alleged that there was a US-led conspiracy to remove him.

Days ago, Khan with the help of his allies suspended the no-confidence vote and declared that he is dissolving parliament. The cricketer-turned-politician pitched for early elections, but a Supreme Court ruling ordered the vote to go ahead.
