Shimoga violence: FIR against BJP minister for provocative speech

A First Investigation Report has been registered against BJP leader and Karnataka Minister K S Eshwarappa for his alleged provocative statements after the murder of Bajrang Dal member Harsha on 20 February that led to anti-Muslim violence in Shimoga.

Harsha, a 26-year-old Hindu activist was hacked to death by unidentified men on 20 February. Eshwarappa alleged that the culprits were goons belonging to the Muslim community, provoking Hindu groups to begin the violence.

Eshwarappa is the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj in the Government of Karnataka and the MLA of the Shimoga assembly constituency.

Although the district administration imposed a curfew following Harsha’s murder, thousands of men joined the funeral procession that ended in violence against Muslims.

Local Muslims have earlier told Maktoob that Eshwarappa was leading the rioters.

Nalbandvadi, a Muslim dominated colony in walkable distance from Harsha’s house, was raided by a mob of thousands of Hindu nationalists, pelting stones and burning houses.

The mob also arson a Muslim shrine.

A special representative court had directed police to register case and investigate the matter.

Karnataka Police have invoked sections of the draconian UAPA against 10 people arrested in connection with the murder of Harsha.
