Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik’s judicial custody extended till April 22

A special court on Monday extended the judicial custody of Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik till 22 April even as Malik complained of ill health.

The NCP leader told the court that he has been unwell due to kidney ailments and that he has a swelling in his legs.

“I want a permanent solution to my medical problems,” said Malik who added that whenever he complained of pain in his legs, the jail authorities only gave him painkillers.

Malik was arrested on 23 February by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering probe linked to the activities of Dawood Ibrahim and his aides.

According to ED, Malik was “actively involved” in the funding of terrorist activities.

Malik’s lawyer Kushal Mor told the court that the minister’s plea filed before the Supreme Court challenging his illegal arrest and seeking immediate release is likely to be heard on 22 April, PTI reported.

In his plea, Malik said that his political rivals targeted him after being “deeply embarrassed by the exposes” carried out by him.

In the plea, Malik also claimed that action was taken against him since he has been a “vocal critique of the misuse of central agencies” since 2020.

Nawab Malik has been repeatedly attacking central enforcement agencies, accusing them of harassing and intimidating opposition leaders at the behest of the BJP-led Union government.
