Demonstrators showing solidarity with the Indian Muslims who have been facing yet another wave of Hindutva violence since 10 April, rallied Saturday at Washington Square Park in New York, yelling slogans and carrying placards against Hindu nationalism.

The protest was organised by the Anti-Fascist Solidarity Network.

The placards reading “Jai Shri Ram means murder,” “Hindutva kills,” “Resist fascism,” and “Decolonize, Debrahmanize” were carried by the protesters.

“While Hindu fascism may have many tentacles reaching all corners of the globe, we have people power that also recognizes, resists, and seeks to annihilate its presence throughout,” one of the organisers of the protest, South Asia Solidarity Initiative wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you to all who joined the Anti-Fascist Solidarity Network demonstration yesterday in Washington Square Park, in support of Indian Muslims who have been facing yet another wave of violence since April 10th,” it said.

Anti-Muslim violence was reported in at least eight states including Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh last week as Hindutva outfits carried out rallies to celebrate Ram Navami.

A pattern is formed as sequences of events across India looked similar, on the same evening. A death was reported in Gujarat and more than 50 houses and shops were destroyed by Hindutva groups in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Mosques were also targeted by saffron activists.

On 2 April, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bajrang Dal, took out a bike rally on Hindu New Year in Karauli, Rajasthan. When the rally passed a Muslim-dominated area, Islamophobic songs were put on high volume in the procession.

Dozen of Muslim traders were looted, vandalised selectively and set on fire by the local Hindutva mob after some people from the rally pelted stones at the mosque while passing it.

The placards reading “Jai Shri Ram means murder,” “Hindutva kills,” “Resist fascism,” and “Decolonize, Debrahmanize” were carried by the protesters.
