Jahangirpuri: 5 Muslims charged under draconian National Security Act

Five Muslims who were arrested in connection with the violence at Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Saturday have been charged under the draconian National Security Act (NSA).

NSA allows detention up to a year without any charge.

Ansar, Salim, Imam Sheikh or Sonu, Dilshad and Ahir will face charges under the NSA.

According to NDTV, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday had dialled Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana and had called for strict action against those responsible for the violence.

“The Home Minister was very categorical and asked Delhi Police not to make any mistake while probing the matter,” said a senior official from the Home Ministry, in an apparent reference to the February 2020 Delhi riots, during the anti-citizenship law protests. The Delhi Police had been heavily criticised over alleged gaps in its investigation.

Twenty-four people, including three juveniles, have been arrested till now. 16 of them are Muslims.

Violence broke out in Jahangirpuri following the shobha yatra when Hindu youth entered a Muslim locality and participants in the yatra threatened to attack a mosque.

Rights groups and Muslim bodies accused Delhi Police of arbitrarily detaining Muslims and not taking action against Hindutva militants who unleashed the violence in the capital city.
