Hanuman Chalisa row: Lawmakers’ couple approach HC to quash FIR

Maharashtra legislator Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana on Monday moved Bombay High Court seeking cancellation of FIR against them for planning to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside the residence of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray.

Navneet Rana, the MP from Amravati and her husband Ravi Rana, an MLA from Badnera in Amravati were arrested on Saturday by the Mumbai Police over allegations of creating enmity between different groups and sedition.

On Sunday, a Mumbai court remanded the couple to 14-day judicial custody.

According to Hindustan Times, Navneet Rana was taken to the Byculla jail while her husband is lodged in Navi Mumbai’s Taloja jail.

The police had also registered another FIR against Ranas for allegedly obstructing police from performing their duty and resisting arrest at their residence in suburban Khar.

On Saturday, Navneet Rana and her husband decided to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside the private residence of chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. Later, Ravi Rana announced that the plan was cancelled due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has lent its support to the Ranas, attacking the Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party leadership in Mumbai took to Twitter Spaces on Sunday to organise a Hanuman Chalisa recital saying that the event was meant to restore communal harmony in the city.
