Chennai: Police offered 1 Lakh rupees to stay silent about custodial death of man, claims family

Days after a man died in custody in a Chennai police station, his brother claimed on Saturday that the police offered him Rs 1 lakh to stay silent on the matter.

“The police offered me Rs 1 lakh (1,00,000) to stay silent on the case,” Vinod, the brother of 25-year-old deceased V Vignesh said to ANI news agency.

He went on to say: “There were wounds on my brother’s body… We were not allowed to see his body after autopsy. Our house owner was threatened by police to make us vacate the premises.”

Vignesh died on 19 April, a day after he and his friend Suresh were arrested in Chennai’s Kellys area for allegedly possessing drugs.

A case of suspicious death was registered in the matter and a police sub-inspector, a constable and a home guard were suspended.

The case has been transferred to the crime branch of Tamil Nadu Crime Investigation Department.

However, the family alleged that no steps were taken in the probe and nobody is ready to speak up on the issue, ANI reported.

The family of the deceased put forth a number of demands, wherein, they have asked for a witness protection scheme and CCTV footage of April 19 from the Patinambakkam, Ainavaram, and G5 police station in Tamil Nadu.

The family’s demand for CCTV footage came in view of Justice Rohinton that mandated the fixation of cameras in all the police stations of the state. (ANI)
