Muslims across India are celebrating the Eid al-Fitr festival Tuesday, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr, or “the festival of breaking the fast”, begins with the first sighting of the new moon, and it often varies from country to country. In many parts of the world, Eid – one of the most important Islamic festivals -was celebrated on Monday.
Eid celebrations begin with a special early morning prayer in mosques and Eid Gahs and later move on to feasts and festivals.
Eid al-Fitr comes amid a surge in hate crimes and genocidal speeches by Hindutva nationalists who are associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party against Muslims, India’s largest religious minority.
Festivals and religious gatherings in India have been limited due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020. Restrictions have now been lifted andMuslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr 2022 the number of virus cases and deaths remain very low.
