“Racially motived violent extremism”: 10 killed in US supermarket mass shooting

A gunman with a rifle and body armour on Saturday opened fire in a supermarket in the US city of Buffalo, New York, killing at least 10 people and wounding three others before being taken into custody.

Police officials said the gunman, who also wore body armour in addition to military-style clothing, pulled up in the afternoon and opened fire amid shoppers at a Tops Friendly Market, the shooting streamed via a camera affixed to the man’s helmet, AP reported.

The supermarket is in a predominately Black neighbourhood. Police said 11 of the victims were Black and two are white.

The official cautioned that the investigation was in its preliminary stages and that authorities had not yet discerned a clear motive, but were investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated.
