UP Cabinet accepts proposal to stop grants to new madrassas

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday, accepted a proposal to exclude new madrasas from its grants list.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Cabinet has now decided that new madrasas will not get any grant from now on, ending the Akhilesh Yadav government’s policy.

According to the official figures, there are total of 16,461 madrasas in UP. Of these, 558 madrassas are being given grants by the government.

Last month, the state government had ordered investigation into the state madrasas under the madrasa modernisation scheme.

On 12 May, the UP Madrasa Education Council had ordered that the national anthem will be sung before the commencement of classes in the morning, and students will be allowed to begin their studies only after the practice concludes.

Following the UP BJP government’s footsteps, the Hindu nationalist governments in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Karnataka are also considering making national anthem mandatory in madrasas.
