All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM)’s Uttar Pradesh state unit secretary Hakeem Abdul Salam Khan was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police for a social media post criticising the “silence of Samajwadi Party’s Muslim MLAs” on the iconic Gyanvapi mosque which has been targeted by the Hindu rightwing.

A case under Section 505 (statements conducing public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against a 40-year-old politician at the Keertarpur police station.

“We have arrested Hakeem Abdul Salam Khan. Investigation in the case is underway,” Keertarpur station house officer (SHO) Manoj Kumar told reporters.

In the post, Khan said that of the 36 Muslim MLAs of the Samajwadi Party no one reacted over the Gyanvapi mosque issue. “This is because slaves have no right to raise objection,” Khan added in a Facebook post in Hindi.

The post went viral.

While condemning the arrest of his colleague, AIMIM’s Uttar Pradesh chief Shaukat Ali said that Khan’s post was for the Samajwadi party leaders and they got a case lodged against him since they got upset with it.
