Hate crime: BJP worker arrested after mentally ill man found dead in MP

Two days after a 65-year-old mentally ill man, Bhawarlal Jain, was found dead in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch, police arrested a local BJP worker who was seen in a video assaulting elderly man while asking him if he was Muslim and his name name was Mohammed.

The video, which went viral after Jain’s death, shows Dinesh Khushwaha, the husband of former BJP councillor Bina Khushwaha, attacking Jain. The saffron party worker can be seen saying: “What is your name? Mohammed?” He is also seen repeatedly asking for Jain’s Aadhaar card.

“Based on his (Khushwaha) suspicious behaviour, an offence under Section 302 for murder of along with other other relevant sections have been registered against Dinesh Khushwaha,” Neemuch Police said.

He was also charged under IPC Section 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

Jain, a resident of Sarsai village in Ratlam district, went missing from Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh on 16 May. Three days later, he was found dead on 19 May in Neemuch’s Manasa tehsil.

In the written note to the police, Rajesh, told police that the family saw injury marks on his body.
