Uttarakhand announce members on panel for Uniform Civil Code

The BJP-led Uttarakhand government has formed a five-member expert committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.

The UCC is referred to a common set of laws on personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance and succession for all citizens, irrespective of religion. The ambitious move by BJP has seen strong opposition from minority communities for years.

The panel will check all the relevant laws that control personal matters. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had pledged to implement UCC during the recent Assembly polls.

According to a government order issued Friday, besides its chairperson Justice Desai, the four members of the UCC panel include ex-Sikkim High Court Chief Justice Permod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, and former Uttarakhand chief secretary Shatrughan Singh, and Doon University vice-chancellor Surekha Dangwal.
