Eminent singer KK dies after live performance in Kolkata

Noted Bollywood singer KK (Krishnakumar Kunnath) passed away at the age of 53 in Kolkata after suffering from a heart attack.

He was performing at a concert at Nazrul Manch in Kolkata. He was brought dead at Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI).

“He was brought dead to the hospital around 10 pm,” said a CMRI hospital staff.

Reports said KK felt unwell during the concert. The singer complained of uneasiness during the interval but performed till the end of the event. Post that, he was taken to a five-star hotel in Esplanade, where his health deteriorated, and he died before he could reach the hospital.

His official Instagram page has visuals of a concert in a Kolkata auditorium held some 10 hours ago.

KK was known for songs like ‘Pal’ and ‘Yaaron’, which went on to become big hits among teens in the late 1990s and often heard during school and college farewells and teen cultural events.

To name a few, the effervescent “Khuda Jaane”, romantic numbers like “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” and “Awarapan Banjarapan”, and melancholic “Tadap Tadap Ke”, one of his early hits from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Apart from Hindi, KK sang in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam, Gujarati and Assamese.

KK was quite inspired by Kishore Kumar. In an interview with Times of India, KK had shared that Kishore Da was one of his earlier influences.

KK was not a trained classical musician. “From the beginning, I was able to learn a song by just hearing it, it is something that I’ve been blessed with. I later learned that Kishoreda had never learnt music, so I had even more reasons to not go to a music class,” he said.

Political leaders, actors and fans tweeted condolences.

“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
