West Bengal: College student arrested for supporting Nupur Sharma on social media

West Bengal Police on Saturday stated they had arrested a college student from Murshidabad district over a social media post after protests erupted for the arrest of BJP leaders. The student allegedly posted on Facebook supporting the offensive comments made on Prophet Muhammad by BJP’s now suspended official spokesperson — Nupur Sharma. 

Following the Facebook post, demonstrations erupted in the Beldanga area in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The demonstrators demanded the arrest of the college student. 

Currently, the WB police had arrested and presented the student in Baharampur Court. The student has been given 10 days of jail protection.

A West Bengal Police officer has confirmed the development of news agency ANI. The official said, “A resident of Beldanga Suroon Colony of Murshidabad district, who is a first-year student of Beldanga College, had posted a Facebook post in support of Nupur Sharma.”

The officer further said, “After this post went viral on social media, violence erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad. The protestors ransacked and demanded his arrest.”

The police also stated that the investigations are under process and they are searching to catch those behind the attacks. 

On Saturday, protests in Murshidabad turned violent when cops tried to clear the protesters from NH-34. The police used tear-gas shells and lathi-charged the demonstrators to clear the area. 

Meanwhile, West Bengal Police has suspended internet services in Beldanga to maintain law and order. WB Police tweeted, “The Internet services in Beldanga, Murshidabad are suspended to maintain law and order. We request citizens to take note, not cause any panic and report to WBP if you come across anything suspicious that can incite violence.”
